Prime Minister Gillani orders release of judges

The Pakistan Justice Coalition applauds the order given by the new Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousaf Raza Gillani, directing the release of all detained judges, including the deposed Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. Prime Minister Gillani issued the order within minutes of being elected by over two-thirds of the National Assembly to the Premiership. The police removed the barricades around the Chief Justice’s residence shortly after the order was issued and the Chief Justice and his family appeared on the balcony to greet the crowds.

The Pakistan Justice Coalition urges the National Assembly to act quickly to restore those judges unconstitutionally removed from power by then-General Pervez Musharraf on November 3, 2007.
